A monumental step towards realising AlUla’s eco-luxury vision was taken when the inaugural rock excavation for the Sharaan resort commenced. Inspired by the nearby Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Atelier Jean Nouvel design will be tucked within rock dwellings.

Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of AlUla, the Royal Commission for AlUla, Bouygues Construction and Jean Nouvel developed innovative construction techniques that pay homage to ancient Nabataean practices while embracing modern engineering methods to create habitable spaces that are aligned to contemporary expectations.

Their approach, which includes excavated areas stacked one on top of the other, not only preserves the landscape but also reflects a commitment to sustainability, in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the AlUla Sustainability Charter.

“The Sharaan Resort is our most ambitious project yet,” Ben Hudson, Chief Development and Construction Officer at Royal Commission for AlUla, tells SceneHome. “This initial excavation is tangible evidence of our continued efforts to develop AlUla into a premier destination that harmonises luxury tourism with the preservation of unique cultural and natural heritage.”

Nestled within the ancient geological wonders of the Sharaan Nature Reserve, the resort will feature 38 custom suites intricately carved into sandstone mountains, harmonising luxury with wellness facilities, amenities and dining in a truly immersive experience highlighting AlUla’s beauty and serenity.

As the Royal Commission for AlUla progresses towards its goal of 5,000 hotel rooms by 2030 and 8,500 rooms by 2035, the Sharaan Resort stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication to safeguarding AlUla’s natural beauty and historical importance for generations to come.
